BHBA members have a long history of pro bono work serving our local LA-region communities and beyond. BHBA is very proud both of our internal pro bono projects and also of co-founding Public Counsel, the nation’s largest public interest law firm in the 1970s. We continue to have in-house pro bono projects and also provide the information below to our members about external programs in which they may want to participate.

Project: Community Legal Clinic
Organization: Beverly Hills Bar Association
Practice Areas: Various

The Community Legal Clinic links BHBA members to residents and charitable organizations in the most disadvantaged areas of Los Angeles that need pro bono legal help. The clinic’s pilot project is a driver license restoration initiative to help clients of Inner City Visions, a 501(c)(3) in south Los Angeles, and clients of Public Counsel’s Transition-Age Foster Youth Program.

Project: Roxbury Park Legal Clinic
Organization: Beverly Hills Bar Foundation
Practice Areas: Various

The first Saturday of each month from 10-11:30 a.m., volunteer attorneys will provide free one-on-one legal guidance to members of the public who may not be able to afford an attorney or know where to turn for legal help. Topics include landlord-tenant issues; wills, trusts, and estate planning; administrative and small claims matters; business disagreements; and other subjects. BHBF reaches out in advance of each monthly clinic to ask volunteers if they can sign up for one or more one-hour time slots that are convenient for them. BHBF sends all volunteers a training video and will have an experienced volunteer available to answer questions at each clinic.

Project: The Latest Cases
Organization: Public Counsel
Practice Areas: Various

Public Counsel regularly updates their list of pro bono opportunities, both in-depth as well as limited scope, some of which can be done entirely or in large part remotely.

Project: Co-Counsel a Case, Directly Represent a Client, or Staff a Legal Clinic
Organization: Bet Tzedek
Practice Areas: Employment, real estate, family law, litigation, etc.

Bet Tzedek has both ongoing pro bono opportunities and individual cases that they regularly seek volunteer counsel for. You can learn about all opportunities through the pro bono opportunities page on their website.

Project: Military Pro Bono Project
Organization: ABA (American Bar Association)
Practice Areas: Family Law; Real Estate Law (Landlord/Tenant); Trusts and Estates

The ABA Military Pro Bono Project is a web-based program on www.MilitaryProBono.org that accepts civil case referrals on behalf of junior-enlisted military personnel from military legal assistance offices worldwide, and then connects the military clients with civilian pro bono attorneys wherever the representation is needed in the United States. The Project also includes Operation Stand-By, through which civilian attorneys may volunteer to offer lawyer-to-lawyer consultations to both military and pro bono civilian attorneys in need of guidance, so they can further help their servicemember clients.
