About the Program

With a global audience rapidly approaching half a billion viewers, the esports industry is projected to grow to $1.6B by 2021. Last year, tournament prize pools for the Fortnite World Cup and DOTA 2?s The International had values of more than $30MM, more than twice that of traditional sporting events including the Daytona 500 and the PGA Masters.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, key entities in the vast esports ecosystem continue to thrive and audiences continue to grow as events and tournaments move online. This seminar will discuss hot legal issues in intellectual property (broadcast rights, licensing, etc.), advertising and sponsorships (non-endemic brand deals, influencer contracts), player and team contracts, player education and recruitment at the high school and collegiate levels and gambling, along with some of the more common sources of disputes (noncompete agreements, exclusivity, rights of publicity). We will also cover the effect of the pandemic on future events and how these entities are adapting to a world where social distancing is currently the new norm.

THE ESPORTS ECOSYSTEM: Legal Issues facing Publishers, Platforms, Teams, Leagues and Players in 2020 and Beyond.

Associate General Counsel, FaZeClan

As an experienced in-house attorney specializing in IP-focused start-up and growth-stage companies, I have spent the last several years building and/or leading legal departments in preparation for their exits. I ran the legal department at Faze Clan as it grew from a 25-person start-up to its IPO. Then at Boardriders, a private equity owned company, I managed legal operations for Quiksilver and DC Shoes and was actively involved in the company’s M&A process resulting in a successful sale of the company in 2023. The experiences of leading and exiting a fast-growing, nimble company in an emerging field and an established, international household name have been different and complementary. One thing that both companies have in common is a strong IP focus, which aligns with my IP background litigating in a big law firm at Quinn Emanuel after graduating from UCLA Law School in 2017.
