This program will cover basic whistleblower concepts, with particular emphasis on qui tam actions, which are civil suits brought by whistleblowers with evidence of fraud in federal, state, or local government programs or contracts, who sue the wrongdoer on behalf of the government under the federal or state False Claims Act.
“Speaking truth to power” has an honorable, if often tragic lineage. A leading civil rights organizer of the mid-century quoted the Prophet Muhammad as saying “the most excellent jihad is when one speaks a true word in the presence of a tyrannical ruler.” Nowhere is this more evident than the workplace.
The program will be presented by Mark Kleiman, Esq., an attorney who has long advocated for whistleblowers, with particular emphasis on qui tam actions. False Claims Act cases filed by Mr. Kleiman have recovered over seven hundred million dollars, with particular emphasis on healthcare, in cases involving matters such as pharmaceutical fraud, hospitals giving kickbacks to doctors or submitting false bills and unacceptable patient care amounting to Medicare fraud. Mr. Kleiman has served as a Special Master during investigations of fraudulent medical-legal activities in cooperation with the California Department of Insurance and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
