This MCLE, co-sponsored with the BHBA Entertainment Section, focuses on cross over issues family law attorneys should be apprised of when representing clients working in the entrainment industry. An entertainment law attorney veteran will explain issues regarding how various contracts and deals can be structured and negotiated, topics such as intellectual property, royalties and other forms of compensation, and endorsement deals will also be discussed. A family law attorney will explain how these concepts can impact family law proceedings, including issues of support and property division. A forensic accountant will also be on hand to explain how property rights, such as royalties and other types of IP, can be divided in a divorce. Additionally, the panel will explore how entertainment attorneys and family law attorneys can and should work together when they share a common client.
Warren R. Shiell is a LA Divorce Lawyer and mediator dedicated exclusively to the practice of divorce and family law in Los Angeles, CA. He is a member of the California and New York Bar. He is a Certified Family Law Specialist and has been endorsed by other family lawyers and family court judges. Graduating from Oxford University with an M.A in Law in 1985, Warren R. Robert Darwell is the Head of Global Media and a senior partner in the Entertainment, Technology and Advertising Practice Group in the firm’s Century City office.
2022 has proven to be another banner year for Darwell and his team. After previously representing Hemisphere Media Group in connection with its acquisition of Lionsgate’s 75% interest in the Spanish language SVOD platform Pantaya and distribution company Pantelion, Darwell worked on its subsequent sale to client TelevisaUnivision. He represented Amazon in connection with its acquisition of MGM, Amazon’s second largest acquisition in history. The team worked tirelessly to analyze and diligence the treasured MGM library and studio assets. The transaction closed in March of 2022 and Darwell and his colleagues having been working with their in house counterparts on the integration of the revered library into Amazon Studios. Darwell also represented TelevisaUnivision in connection with its 2022 AVOD and SVOD platform launch of Vix and Vix+. On top of that, Darwell also guided Amazon Studios, Wondery, Nickelodeon, Disney, Peacock and Meta in connection with numerous high-profile movie, television, podcast and metaverse projects.
