As of January 1, 2024, most civil cases venued in California state courts will be subject to new mandatory discovery procedures as codified by Code of Civil Procedure 2016.090. Counsel in most civil cases will now have to an ongoing obligation to disclose various facts, documents, and witness from the outset of the case. This program, led by distinguished litigators Paul Kiesel and Greg Sperla, will address the type of discovery and evidence subject to this mandatory disclosure, limitations of the mandate, continuing obligations, potential pitfalls and ramifications of failure to comply, and the anticipated challenges and solutions this new obligation poses to both defense and plaintiff’s counsel alike.
Greg Sperla is a litigator and regulatory attorney protecting clients in complex litigation and regulatory enforcement matters. He is focused on the science of consumer products, food and beverages, and is broadly experienced in domestic and global regulation of
consumer goods and disputes. On behalf of manufacturers, distributors and retailers, Mr. Sperla has conducted trials and appeals and defended matters against local, state, and federal agencies.
Paul Kiesel received his Juris Doctorate from the Whittier College School of Law in Los Angeles in 1985. In 2005, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law from Whittier Law School. His practice is devoted to representing consumers in personal injury, class action, environmental, and toxic tort litigation.
Mr. Kiesel has repeatedly been selected as one of the top plaintiff attorneys in the State of California and the country. The Los Angeles Business Journal recognized Mr. Kiesel as one of the Top 50 Trial Lawyers. The Daily Journal named Mr. Kiesel one of the 100 most influential attorneys in the State of California. He was also selected as one of the top 500 attorneys in the United States by Law Dragon. In addition, Mr. Kiesel is rated A.V. (highest rating) by Martindale-Hubbell.
