Do BHBA podcasts count for MCLE credit in California?

Yes, as Self-Study credit.
California licensees report 25 MCLE hours every three years. At least half of those hours have to be participatory, which caps Self-Study at 12.5 hours per compliance period. Audio versions of BHBA programs sit in the Self-Study category, so you can use them for up to 12.5 of your 25 hours.

If you already earned credit for a program in video form, you cannot claim it again for the audio version.

How do you claim credit for a podcast episode?

  1. Finish the episode.
  2. Submit the CLE credit affidavit.
  3. Members at the Sustainer level or higher get their certificate emailed after submission. Everyone else receives an invoice for the $45 podcast CLE fee, and the certificate is issued once it clears.
Either way, a copy is stored in your BHBA+ profile. A BHBA+ account is free to create.

Where can I listen?

Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, and every other major podcast app. Search the show title in whatever you already use, or follow the links above.

Is there a fee to listen?

No. Both shows are free to anyone. The $45 fee applies only if you want a CLE certificate and you are not a member at the Sustainer level or above.

Do I need a BHBA membership?

Not to listen. Sustainer level and above includes unlimited CLE access, so members at that level pay nothing for podcast certificates. Law students and new attorneys can join free at bhba.org/nextgen.

How many Self-Study hours can I claim in California?

Up to 12.5 of your 25 hours per three-year compliance period. The other 12.5 must be participatory.

Can I claim participatory credit for a podcast?

No. Participatory credit requires verified attendance. Watch the program in the OnDemand library instead and it earns participatory credit in California.

Can attorneys outside California claim credit?

California is the only state where credit is automatic. Everywhere else depends on that jurisdiction's own self-study rules, so check with your bar first.

When do new episodes come out?

Episodes are released daily. Follow the show in your app and they arrive on their own.
