Although podcast technology debuted during the early aughts, the format’s first breakout hit didn’t occur until the 2014 arrival of true-crime drama “Serial” Season 1, which subsequently inspired an HBO documentary series. During the last several years, Amazon and Bravo have enjoyed success with podcast-based scripted dramas “Homecoming” and “Dirty John” respectively. The entertainment industry practice of using podcasts as source material for derivative works has become increasingly common. Our esteemed panel will discuss the trends, issues and contractual pain points in creating podcast adaptations for other media such as television, film and documentaries (and vice versa).

To date, forty of Wondery’s shows have reached # 1 on the Apple Podcasts Charts. At least 22 of Wondery’s podcasts are being developed for TV adaptations.
Prior to joining Wondery, UnJu was Executive Vice President of 21st Century Fox heading the intellectual property group of 21CF during its historical merger with The Walt Disney Company. During her 24-year tenure at Fox, UnJu also ran the legal department of Twentieth Century Fox Television which produced shows such as Simpsons, Family Guy, Modern Family and This is Us. UnJu started her legal career at Fox in the home entertainment department managing worldwide licensing and operations.
Peabody Award-winning creator Ben Strouse oversees Gen-Z Media. Before co-founding GZM, Ben practiced Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law in New York City. He is the author of The New York Times Best-of-the-Year children’s book Hey Boy (Simon & Schuster), as well as the writer/composer of the Off-Broadway musical Whateverman.
As a digital agent, Davis represents a variety of YouTube talent and helps lead WME’s podcast efforts. Recent accomplishments include brokering the deal for client Casey Neistat to sell his company to CNN for $25 million and setting up Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Digital Studios.
