AB 5 marked a sea change in how employees and independent contractors are classified under California law. AB 5’s strict “ABC” test effectively precluded many industries that traditionally relied on independent contractors from utilizing contractors, instead requiring that traditional contractors be classified as employees. Our speakers will dispute and explain the practical impacts on employers and employees and the effect of the recent Proposition 22.
In practice since 1996, attorney and firm co-founder Eric B. Kingsley has litigated complex cases and authored numerous appellate briefs in both state and federal court on behalf of the California law firm of Kingsley & Kingsley, including over 150 class actions. Mr. Kingsley concentrates his practice on wage and hour litigation and is currently handling several class actions regarding the failure to pay wages, including overtime and the denial of break or meal periods. In addition, to wage and hour litigation, Eric handles the claims of individuals who have been wrongfully terminated or sexually harassed in the work place.
Andie Fields is an Associate Attorney with the Genie Harrison Law Firm. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Andie earned her undergraduate degree from University of California, Davis where she majored in Communications. Andie returned to Los Angeles and received her law degree from Southwestern Law School. Andie has been recognized by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star from 2020 to 2024.
Nicholas “Nick” Sarris is the Managing Partner of JML Law’s Los Angeles office and has been practicing in the field of employment law for the entirety of his career. Nick began his career with Mr. Lovretovich representing employees and subsequently transitioned to representing management in employment litigation. After nearly a decade of representing management as an associate and partner at two national law firms, Nick returned to representing employees and joined JML Law as a Partner in 2017.
