Bankruptcies and Receiverships: Comparing Stakeholder Perspectives

Shantal Malmed is an Associate in ECJ’s Receivership, Bankruptcy, and Creditors’ Rights Services Department. Her practice focuses on complex insolvency and fiduciary matters, including receiverships, bankruptcy litigation, and asset recovery. Shantal brings experience representing trustees in Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 proceedings, handling adversary actions, settlements, and court-approved asset sales in the real estate, finance, healthcare, aviation, food and restaurants, wholesale distribution, retail, ecommerce, and energy industries.

She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law and holds a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from UCLA.  During law school, she served as Treasurer of the Jewish Law Student Association and Academic Chair of the Women’s Law Society. 

Judge Victoria S. Kaufman serves on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, San Fernando Valley division, sitting in Courtroom 354/301 at the Woodland Hills courthouse. She was appointed by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006 and previously worked of counsel at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker (2004-06) and Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro (1999-2004, 1996-97), and clerked for Judge Marilyn Shea-Stonum of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio in 1998. Earlier in her career, she was of counsel at Bingham McCutcheon (1994-96) and an associate at Levene & Eisenberg, Los Angeles (1991-94) and Latham & Watkins, San Diego and New York (1989-91).

Kyra E. Andrassy is a partner at Raines Feldman Littrell LLP, specializing in insolvency law and fiduciary representation, where she represents chapter 11 debtors, chapter 7 and chapter 11 trustees, secured and unsecured creditors, creditors’ committees, and other parties in bankruptcy and receivership matters. Before joining Raines Feldman Littrell, she was a partner at Smiley Wang-Ekvall, LLP and served a judicial clerkship from 1998 to 2000 for the Honorable John E. Ryan, a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Central District of California and member of the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel. Kyra earned her law degree from Loyola Law School, where she served as an editor of the Loyola Law Review, and remains a frequent speaker on bankruptcy and receivership topics.

Byron Z. Moldo is a Partner and Chair of Receivership, Bankruptcy, and Creditors’ Rights Services, specializing throughout his career in bankruptcy, receivership, assignments for the benefit of creditors, and all aspects of insolvency. He regularly serves as a Receiver, assignee, and fiduciary in state and federal courts, previously spent approximately ten years as a Chapter 7 and 11 Bankruptcy Trustee in the Central District of California, and is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in California. He holds a J.D. from Southwestern Law School and a B.A. from UCLA.
