This program explores the strategic importance of requesting a Statement of Decision (SOD) and understanding the implications of the doctrine of implied findings. It provides guidance on when and how to request an SOD, the procedural requirements for proposing findings, and best practices for preparing, objecting to, and leveraging the SOD both for appellate purposes and for future proceedings in trial court.

Robert Roth is a partner at Complex Appellate Litigation Group LLP and is recognized as one of California’s leading family law appellate specialists. With over 30 years of experience, he has more than 25 published appellate opinions, along with numerous unpublished ones. He has won twice in the California Supreme Court and represented the successful respondent in In re Marriage of Ostler and Smith (1990) 223 Cal.App.3d 33, a key case that established the method for calculating the division of bonus income in California courts. Ryan Wedeking is an LA-based family law litigator who represents professionals and business owners in complex family law litigation throughout Los Angeles County and the Bay Area. In 2024, Doyle’s Guide recognized Ryan as a “Leading” attorney in their “family, matrimonial divorce” category, one of fewer than 20 family law attorneys in Los Angeles to receive that level of recognition. Ryan is a consummate trial attorney whose every decision is guided by strategy: achieving the client’s best possible outcome as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Before starting his own practice, Ryan litigated for some of California’s most prestigious family law firms. While attending the UCLA School of Law, Ryan founded and served as president of the UCLA Family Law Society and was awarded the Martin C. Pachter Prize for excellence in family law.
