About the Program

This session provides a foundational overview of the international and domestic legal frameworks governing outer space activity. Drawing on the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 and U.S. commercial space laws, it covers core principles — from state liability and private actor oversight to resource mining, orbital debris, and conflict resolution — and flags the open legal questions that remain unsettled as commercial space activity accelerates. Attorneys will leave with a practical grounding in how space law works today and where the gaps are.

M.C. Sungaila is a partner at the Complex Appellate Litigation Group, where she has briefed or argued more than 170 appeals spanning complex and cutting-edge issues across a range of practice areas. She has handled matters before the U.S. Supreme Court, multiple state supreme courts, numerous federal and state appellate courts, and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
