In this session, attorneys will discover how the language they use — internally and out loud — directly fuels or sabotages their performance, and how to leverage emotion as a tool rather than be governed by it. The legal profession is associated with some of the highest rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout of any profession. Emotional intelligence and self-regulation are increasingly recognized as core competencies — directly tied to client trust, negotiation outcomes, ethical decision-making, and personal wellbeing. Specific words and emotional states measurably shift physiology and judgment. Learning to recognize and shift them on demand is one of the highest-leverage skills an attorney can develop.
In this session, attorneys will learn:
The science of language and emotion — how specific words shift physiology, decision-making, and performance, for better or for worse.
How to identify which emotional states elevate legal performance (focused calm, grounded confidence, curious resolve) and which collapse it.
Practical techniques to access useful emotional states on demand — before depositions, difficult client conversations, settlement talks, and trial.
The Productive Processing (PP) Journal — a daily “Power Play” Strategy: a short, structured journaling practice that builds emotional intelligence, sharpens self-awareness, clarifies intention, and converts insight into purpose-driven action.
Participants will leave with a working model of emotional self-regulation tailored to legal practice, the complete Productive Processing journal template, and a daily 5–10 minute practice that compounds into measurable emotional and ethical resilience.
