About the Program

Divorce cases usually involve only two parties: the spouses. However, in some cases third parties need to be joined to adjudicate property or other claims. This CLE will discuss the complex legal and ethical issues that can arise when litigating claims against third parties joined to marital dissolution actions. The presenters will review the law governing joinder and its application to frequently encountered fact patterns in the marital dissolution context. The presenters will also discuss their practical experience and insights into resolving these cases—both from the practitioner’s point of view and the judge’s point of view.

Hon. Christine Byrd (Ret.)

Mediator, Arbitrator, Referee JAMS (Moderator)

Hon. Christine Byrd (Ret.) has joined JAMS after serving 13 years as a judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court, where she was assigned to the Family Law Division and developed experience in family law issues. During her tenure, Judge Byrd presided over hundreds of cases for child custody, child support, divorce, domestic violence, legal separation, parentage, and spousal or domestic partner support. In recognition of her capabilities, Judge Byrd was twice appointed by the chief justice to the Family Law Curriculum Committee, a California statewide committee on judicial education. In 2017, she was selected to hear long, complex family law cases, where she remained until her retirement in 2023. In 2018 she was awarded Family Law Judge of the Year by the Southern California Chapter of the American Inns of Court.
