About the Program

Family law litigation frequently involves challenging personalities and conduct that tests the boundaries of professionalism. This program provides practical strategies for addressing potentially sanctionable behavior, with an emphasis on the proactive use of case management orders. The discussion will cover when and how to request these orders, the types of directives that may be effective, and how structured case management can lead to better outcomes—offering solutions beyond merely threatening or seeking sanctions. Michael B. Hanasab (Jamra Jamra & Hanasab LLP), Judge Nicole C. Bershon (Los Angeles Superior Court), and Hon. Susan Lopez-Giss (Ret.) (ADR Services, Inc.) will share insights on managing incivility with strategy, authority, and professionalism.

She then spent six years with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, handling both civil and criminal matters, including a number of domestic violence cases. Before joining the bench, Judge Bershon spent almost 10 years with the Office of the Inspector General for the Los Angeles Police Commission, first as an Assistant Inspector General, and later as Inspector General for the LAPD.

Judge Bershon is a former President of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and is a prior recipient of their Distinguished Service Award.
