In the past five years there has been a worldwide focus on the effects of recent events upon mental health. The World Health Organization’s campaign to make mental health and well-being for all a global priority included declaring October 10 to be World Mental Health Day. In addition to the WHO’s declaring a global mental health crisis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that substance abuse and drug overdose deaths has greatly increased in recent years.
The stresses of the legal profession put lawyers at risk for abuse of legal and illegal substances. How can those of us in the legal profession gain control and find joy in a “chaotic world”?
The presentation will discuss mental well-being and substance use disorders in the legal profession today.
Judge Elizabeth Feffer served on the Los Angeles Superior Court for 13 years before transitioning to alternative dispute resolution as a private judge with ADR Services, Inc. During her tenure, she presided over an unlimited jurisdiction civil independent calendar court, a civil trial court, and a family law court. Judge Feffer handled more than 75 civil jury trials, over 500 civil bench trials, hundreds of evidentiary hearings, and numerous settlement conferences involving complex factual and legal issues. She now specializes in mediations, arbitrations, discovery and judicial references, and private trials.
Nadira Imam is the Senior Associate Attorney at Lawrence H. Jacobson, APC in Beverly Hills, California. She handles a wide variety of general transactional matters for businesses and individuals throughout California. Her practice focuses primarily in the areas of business and corporate law, estate planning and real estate including entity formation, mergers and acquisitions, succession planning, trademark applications, real estate finance, brokerage law and mortgage brokerage law, escrow and title insurance matters, real estate secured transactions, purchase, sale, finance and leasing of commercial, industrial and residential property, tax free exchanges and structured tenancies in common.
