Now, two years after the COVID-19 pandemic-related closures, in what many describe as the ?New Normal,? there has been a wordwide focus on the effects of the pandemic upon mental health. The World Health Organization?s campaign to make mental health and well-being for all a global priority included declaring October 10 to be World Mental Health Day. In addition to the WHO?s declaring a global mental health crisis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that substance abuse and drug overdose deaths greatly increased during the pandemic.
Pre-pandemic, the stresses of the legal profession put lawyers at risk for abuse of legal and illegal substances. Now that courts have reopened, and in-person jury trials have resumed, has the legal profession returned to the pre-pandemic baseline?
The presentation will discuss mental well-being and substance use disorders in the legal profession today.
Nadira Imam is the Senior Associate Attorney at Lawrence H. Jacobson, APC in Beverly Hills, California. She handles a wide variety of general transactional matters for businesses and individuals throughout California. Her practice focuses primarily in the areas of business and corporate law, estate planning and real estate including entity formation, mergers and acquisitions, succession planning, trademark applications, real estate finance, brokerage law and mortgage brokerage law, escrow and title insurance matters, real estate secured transactions, purchase, sale, finance and leasing of commercial, industrial and residential property, tax free exchanges and structured tenancies in common.Â
Over the course of her 13 years of judicial service, Judge Feffer served in an unlimited jurisdiction civil independent calendar court for 6 years, a civil trial court for 3 years, and a family law court for 4 years. During that time, Judge Feffer presided over more than 75 civil jury trials, more than 500 civil bench trials, hundreds of evidentiary hearings, and numerous settlement conferences, with a diverse range of complex factual and legal issues. Judge Feffer has handled a wide array of cases, including employment litigation, professional liability, personal injury, elder abuse, products liability, business litigation and partnership disputes, real estate litigation, land use litigation, eminent domain, insurance coverage, insurance bad faith, and entertainment cases.
